Publishing a post

A post is an invitation. Here's how to write one people want to answer.

  1. Say the thing

Open the composer and write what you actually think. Not a summary of the debate, but your position, your question, or the piece of writing you have been sitting on. A paragraph is a post.

  2. Give it a title someone can answer

This is the part that decides whether anyone replies. "Thoughts on remote work?" invites nothing. "Remote work made me worse at my job" invites everyone. Point at something: a title that takes a position gets answered, a title that surveys gets scrolled.

  3. Choose where it lives

By default your post is public and anyone can find it. If it belongs to a community you are in, put it in that group at publish time. You can pick more than one.

  4. Publish

That's it. You get a notification the moment someone answers, and the conversation shows up in your dashboard.

The composer
  1. 1 Title: The top line of the composer. It is what people see in a feed.
  2. 2 Your post: The writing area under the title. Formatting lives in the toolbar above it.
  3. 3 Add to a group: The selector in the footer bar. Leave it empty to post to your followers.

After you publish

You can edit a post after the fact, and you can delete it whenever you want.

Common questions

What can I post about?

Anything you have a point of view on: an opinion, a question, an analysis, a reflection, or a story you want to open up for conversation.

Do I have to write long posts?

No. You can start a post with a single clear thought, or just reply to one. Say what you mean and stop; length is up to you.

Do I have to start a post, or can I just reply?

Either. Plenty of posts are already running and waiting for a good answer, so you can just find one and reply. Many people start that way and post their own question later.

Will anyone actually read what I write?

Yes, that's what Seavien is built for. Your writing is shown to a curious audience through feeds, search, and recommendations, and we help new writers get seen so your first pieces find readers. Post something real and people respond.

Can I edit or delete a post after publishing it?

Yes, both, at any time. Edits keep the replies people already wrote, and deleting a post removes it along with its conversation.
