Mia froze.

The footsteps had stopped.

Noah whispered, “Did you hear that?”

Another sound came from behind the trees.

Tok.

Mia held the second diary tightly.

Then a figure stepped into the moonlight.

It was Lily.

“Mia?”

For several seconds, neither girl moved.

“You're alive,” Mia whispered.

Lily nodded.

“But I never disappeared.”

“Then why did you stop talking to me?”

Lily looked at the two diaries.

“Because someone told me that if I contacted you, you'd become part of it too.”

“Part of what?”

Lily's face went pale.

“The Tomorrow Project.”

I don't buy Lily yet.
Someone scared enough to go silent all this time doesn't just walk into the moonlight at night unless somebody sent her. My money says she's already part of it.

Mia gripping the second diary harder the moment the footsteps stop says a lot. My guess is she trusts that diary more than she trusts Lily right now, and she has reasons.

Lily turning up and saying she never disappeared flips everything, because now the real mystery is who has been telling Mia the story all along. I bet whoever warned Lily off is someone Mia already trusts, maybe the same person behind the second diary. Those three knocks before she steps out had me reading faster :)
