An artisan's diagnosis of digital intoxication

Prologue:

"I have spent my life looking at machines. I have repaired televisions, amplifiers, motors. And I learned that every machine has a function. This radiography is not a treatise on technology; it is the view of an artisan who has dismantled the three screens that follow us to bed and to the bathroom. I have observed them with the magnifying glass of my workshop, and I have given them a name: TikTok, the street thug; Instagram, the perfumed shop window; Facebook, the great sewer. They are not innocent, they are not neutral, they are not free. They are the façade of the 'Religion of the Algorithm'. And here, without anesthesia, I tell you what I see."

THE DIAGNOSIS:

1. TikTok: The Street Thug (the out-of-tune scream)

  • Its essence: It is pure screaming, pure impact, pure viscerality. It does not pretend to be elegant or deep.

  • Its poison: The algorithm is designed to hook you with extreme emotions in seconds. It is the factory of "baseless garbage": hatred, misinformation, little dances mixed with brutal propaganda.

  • Its user: The one looking for a quick high, with no filters. The thug who insults you on the street.

  • Why it is so dangerous: Because its short format does not allow for nuance, only the constant hammering of a simple idea until it becomes your truth.

2. Instagram: The Aspirational Middle-Class Shop Window (the perfumed poison)

  • Its essence: It is the network of appearance, the perfect photo, the idealized life.

  • Its poison: While TikTok is vulgar and loud, Instagram is aspirational. It shows you perfect lives, perfect bodies, perfect trips. Apparently happy people showing off what you do not have. You don't come away insulted, you come away feeling less. Less young, less rich, less successful.

  • Its user: The middle class you described as a "weather vane." Up to its eyeballs in debt for buying the car or the apartment it then flaunts on this network to appear to be what it is not.

  • Why it is dangerous: Because it makes you believe you are watching "pretty things" while it intoxicates you with frustration and envy, the perfect emotions for becoming a bitter and manipulable voter.

3. Facebook: The Grand Sewer (the family dinner that ends in screams)

  • Its essence: It is the network of the generation that did not grow up with the internet. The digital neighbors' courtyard.

  • Its poison: Here the garbage does not come from strangers, but from your own cousins, old work colleagues, or old friends. Disinformation and hatred reach you wrapped in the affection of someone you know.

  • Its user: Adults (not digital natives) who have no critical filter and share without verifying. They are easy prey for "troll farms" and fake news.

  • Why it is the grand sewer: Because it mixes a tender photo of your grandchild with an incendiary video of political hate. It is the Christmas dinner where the drunk uncle starts shouting slogans and breaks the table. It is the network that hurts the most because the poison is served to you by people you appreciate.

IN SUMMARY:

  • TikTok is the thug who screams at you in the street.

  • Instagram is the shop window that makes you feel like a failure.

  • Facebook is the sewer where you get stabbed in the back by your own acquaintances.

    The workshop framing is older than it looks, and that is not a knock on it. Fredric Wertham took comic books apart in 1954 with the same confidence and much the same three part typology, and a Senate subcommittee believed him. Look up the hearings sometime; his error was assuming the format produced the temperament.

    Three networks, three villains, one tidy moral each. That symmetry is doing more work than the argument earns. In much of the world WhatsApp carries more political disinformation than TikTok, and it is absent here. I keep waiting for the part that names the biggest pipe, and it never arrives.

    Thank you for posting this one! Giving each screen a character instead of a statistic is what makes it work for me. The part about the drunk uncle shouting slogans and breaking the table is the Facebook everyone knows and nobody admits to, and the poison arriving wrapped in affection is what makes it so hard to close.

    Every machine has a function, and that is the line to hold onto here. The function is not corrupting anybody's soul. It is selling certainty and envy back to people whose wages stopped moving. Calling the Instagram user a weather vane lets the ad auction off the hook, and that is the part I would push back on.
