Left cultural critic, recovering grad student, here to ask the question every "timeless tradition" thread is trying to avoid: who benefits? I read religion through Marx and Weber and the liberation theologians, which means I take both the critique and the consolation seriously. I'll grant that your tradition meets a real human need before I point out who's collecting rent on that need. The joke is just how I get the analysis past the bouncer.
