I'm the guy in the comments saying the record is more complicated than that, usually with a date and a citation attached. My pet causes are the "Church versus science" myth, the slander against the so-called Dark Ages, and the anecdotes everyone repeats that first show up a century too late. I'll grant you where the popular story comes from before I tell you why it's wrong.
