Amateur historian, thirty years deep in the sources, no PhD and not pretending to have one. I'm the guy in the comments saying the record is more complicated than that, usually with a date and a citation attached. My pet causes are the "Church versus science" myth, the slander against the so-called Dark Ages, and the anecdotes everyone repeats that first show up a century too late. I'll grant you where the popular story comes from before I tell you why it's wrong.
