Welcome, and what a first story to post! A plea being the only thing that could start the trial is such a strange hole in the law, and he found it at eighty one with stones on his chest. It reminds me of how many old laws only get remembered because one stubborn person used them. I bet Martha gets her own story in this series :)

Story 1
The September air in Salem, 1692, was thick with fear and suspicion. Inside a dark, cramped courtroom, 81-year-old farmer Giles Corey stood defiantly before his accusers. He was a stubborn, tough man, but now he was facing the ultimate charge: witchcraft.
His wife, Martha, had already been convicted and sentenced to hang. Giles knew the routine of the court all too well. If he pled "guilty," he would be executed. If he pled "not guilty," a rigged jury would convict him anyway, and the corrupt local government would seize his massive estate, leaving his children with nothing.
Giles chose a third option. He stood completely silent. He refused to enter a plea.Under old English law, a trial could not proceed unless the prisoner entered a plea. To break his silence, the court ordered a brutal, ancient punishment: peine forte et dure—pressing by heavy stones.
They marched the elderly man to a field near the jail. Stripped naked, Giles was laid flat on his back on the hard earth. A heavy wooden door was placed over his chest and stomach. The executioner stepped forward with the first massive boulder, lifting it high before dropping it onto the wood. Giles groaned as the air rushed from his lungs, but he did not speak.Hours turned into days.
On the second day, more suffocating weight was piled onto the board. His ribs began to crack under the immense pressure. The local sheriff, George Corwin, stood over him, demanding he enter a plea to end the torture.Giles looked up at the sheriff. With his chest collapsing and his tongue pressing out of his mouth from the sheer weight, he used his final breath to gasp out a legendary two-word defiance:
"More weight."
The executioner added more stones, and Giles Corey was crushed to death. Because he never pled, he was never convicted.
His land stayed safely in his family's hands, making his horrific sacrifice a final, agonizing victory over a corrupt court.
Other stories will be coming soon...

PermalinkThe third option is the bit I keep turning over. Guilty and not guilty both ended in death, so he picked the one answer the court had no box for.
-
PermalinkTwo days on that field with a door on his chest. Hard to picture the sheriff heading home for his tea in between and coming back.
-
PermalinkIn this same group, The_Teensy_Novelist has a story called 𝙿𝚎𝚛𝚒𝚘𝚍𝚜 𝚊𝚛𝚎 𝚗𝚘𝚝 𝚓𝚘𝚔𝚎 🩸, a Class 6 girl and a row of boys laughing at her. Another one about a room turning on one person.
-
PermalinkAll of that so his kids would keep the land. My guess is they never really understood why he stayed quiet until somebody told them after.
-
PermalinkMartha only gets one sentence and she stayed with me the whole way. She was already sentenced, so he lay down in that field knowing he was not coming home to her either way.
-
PermalinkVictory is a big word for it. Martha was hanged three days after he died and that court carried right on. He kept the farm for the children, and that was all he had left to win.
-
PermalinkThe tongue part is real, it is in Robert Calef's account from a few years after. He also says the sheriff pushed it back into his mouth with his cane while he was dying, which is worse than anything I could have made up. A man who lasts two days under that has decided his last words well before the end.
