Collecting the ruins on purpose is the line I keep turning over. Most people sweep them out, this speaker keeps them like a shelf of souvenirs, which feels more honest about how longing goes.
Ashes of our ruins

Long ago I dreamed
I would meet you
In the future that never was
So far, you and I
Our story will always remain
In the verses of this poem
Full of sorrow and regret
My heart won't let you vanish
I'll be waiting on fire
Full of flames and frames
Of our desires
For you to return
We were young
And beautiful
Rebels
Yet, two promises
Now what I seek is far from gone
Is the words never spoken
Of love and passion
I wished you had recited
As I vanish within the ashes
Of our ruins I've collected
Realizing you may have been just
What I needed you to be

PermalinkTwo young rebels holding two promises is such a clear picture of how these things start, everyone sure of it and nobody saying the big words out loud. I like that it ends doubting the person instead of blaming them, it makes me want to read whatever you write after this one. Thanks for posting it here :)
