Every morning, twelve-year-old Tara woke up before her alarm. She loved school, especially the sound of children talking in the corridors, the smell of new notebooks, and the excitement of learning something new.
Tara had always been one of the best students in her class. She also loved drawing. Her notebooks were filled with tiny sketches of flowers, houses, trees, and people.
Her two closest friends, Anaya and Siya, were always beside her.
They studied together, ate lunch together, and walked home together.
For Tara, everything felt perfect.
Until one day, everything changed.
The Announcement
One Monday morning, their class teacher announced a school art competition.
βThe winner will get a chance to represent our school at the district-level competition,β she said.
Tara's eyes lit up.
This was exactly what she had been waiting for.
She spent the next two weeks preparing a beautiful drawing. She stayed after school to improve it and asked her teacher for advice.
Anaya and Siya were also participating, but Tara wasn't worried. They always supported one another.
Then, a few days before the competition, Anaya and Siya started spending more time together.
They discussed their drawings, practiced together, and made plans without Tara.
At first, Tara didn't think much about it.
But soon, they began sitting together during lunch.
They walked home without waiting for her.
They even created a group chat for the competition but forgot to add Tara.
Tara noticed everything.
She didn't complain.
She didn't ask why.
She simply became quiet.
The Feeling
One afternoon, Tara sat alone on a bench after school.
She watched Anaya and Siya laughing together near the playground.
She wondered what had happened.
βMaybe they don't need me anymore,β she thought.
That thought hurt more than she expected.
At home, Tara opened her drawing book.
Usually, drawing made her happy.
That evening, however, she couldn't draw a single line.
She closed the book and put it away.
For the first time, Tara felt as if everyone around her was moving forward while she was standing still.
She felt left behind.
The Competition
The day of the competition finally arrived.
Tara entered the classroom where the competition was being held.
Anaya and Siya were already there.
They smiled at her, but Tara could tell that things were different.
The teacher gave them two hours.
βBegin!β
Everyone started drawing.
Tara looked at her blank sheet.
For a few seconds, she couldn't think of anything.
Then she remembered all the evenings she had spent drawing.
She remembered her first picture.
She remembered the encouragement from her parents.
She remembered why she loved art.
Slowly, she picked up her pencil.
She began drawing a long road.
On one side of the road were tall trees.
On the other side were small houses.
Far away, there was a sunrise.
And walking along the road was a little girl carrying a sketchbook.
The girl was alone.
But she wasn't sad.
She was looking forward.
Tara smiled as she finished the drawing.
The Result
A week later, the results were announced.
The teacher stood in front of the class with an envelope.
βThe winner of the district-level art competition isβ¦β
Everyone became silent.
βTara!β
The classroom filled with applause.
Tara couldn't believe it.
Her teacher handed her the certificate.
βYou deserved this,β she said.
Tara smiled.
But she didn't feel proud because she had defeated her friends.
She felt proud because she hadn't allowed loneliness to stop her from doing what she loved.
A New Beginning
After school, Anaya and Siya approached Tara.
βCan we talk?β Anaya asked.
Tara nodded.
βWe're sorry,β Siya said. βWe didn't realize that we were making you feel left out.β
Tara was quiet for a moment.
Then she said, βI was hurt. But I don't want to fight.β
The three girls talked for a long time.
Things didn't become exactly the same immediately.
And Tara understood that they didn't have to.
People change.
Friendships change.
Plans change.
Sometimes people walk beside us for years.
Sometimes they take a different road.
And sometimes we have to walk alone for a while.
The Lesson
Months later, Tara looked at the drawing she had made for the competition.
She remembered the lonely girl on the road.
She realized that the girl wasn't actually lost.
She was simply taking a different path.
Tara finally understood something important:
Being left behind doesn't always mean that you have failed.
Sometimes it means that your journey is different.
You don't have to run at someone else's speed.
You don't have to reach the same place at the same time.
You just have to keep walking.
And Tara kept walking.
Not behind anyone.
Not ahead of anyone.
Just on her own road.
