When did you realize that the people you like most around you don't actually know you? I mean really know you — what kept you awake at night, why you made the choices you made, what breaks you. And how do you live with that? Does it get to you or are you used to it already?

I knew a man for twenty years and only after he left did I find out his son had been in real trouble. He never mentioned it once, and nobody asked. And I suppose that was fine by him.
