I drove past a man on the 49 for about fifteen years, same bench near the station every morning at quarter to eight, reading a book that must have been falling apart. One winter he was not there. I thought about him for a week. I do not know if he was at peace. But he was present. He showed up. The people on that bus route remembered him.
The signs of progress on spiritual path.

The results and signs after gaining the knowledge of oneness.
These signs are nothing but the result of having understanding towards the knowledge of oneness.
There are many signs, and they depend on the person. But according to us, what are the most powerful signs?
Signs such as true peace and detachment are among the most common signs that can be seen in a person.
Regarding detachment, you will start feeling detached from your relationships, then from your body, and finally from your mind. The more intense the detachment is, the harder it is to live in this world. But great spiritual gurus say that we have to work with detachment. Why? They give this specific guidance for those who are so completely detached from this world that they do not even want to do the bare minimum to stay alive. Such people do not even eat food because of their detachment from it. In this case, guidance is given so that they at least do some basic work to satisfy their body's necessities.
You see, many people who have no knowledge of spirituality think that working with deliberate detachment is a big deal. No, it is not for them; this guidance is for those whose detachment from this world is so extreme that their lives are in danger. For them, it is said that they should work detached. Detachment should come to you; you should not go chasing detachment.
In such cases, the best way to live life is to use your intelligence. Do what is necessary to do. If eating and keeping your body alive is necessary, then do it. If you truly do not want to live this life and are completely sure that your karmic relationships are finished here, then you should find a guru, and they will guide you on how to leave this world quickly.
The second sign is peace. See, there are two types of peace. One is false peace, which comes from achieving something; this peace is not stable or eternal, and it changes. Just like your mood swings—one moment you feel good and you are at peace, and when you do not feel good, you are not at peace. This type of peace is false, and the majority of the population chases it.
What is real peace? After attaining your true form—that is, oneness—you will see that even when your day is not going well, it is fine. When someone makes you cry or feel heavy, it is okay to cry and feel heavy, and after that, everything is alright. This type of acceptance—that everything is fine, whether things go the way you want or do not want, whether you get what you desire or do not get it—is real peace. When this feeling that everything is fine arises within you, then you can consider yourself truly at peace—not because I or someone else told you so, but because it naturally arises from within you.
There are other signs too, but they are not signs of progress on our path of knowledge. These signs can include gaining certain powers or having your desires fulfilled one after another. See, these types of signs come to you because your internal walls are falling down, and you are becoming closer and closer to your true self.

PermalinkIs detachment what you mean, or is it coming to terms with what you cannot keep? I have seen people find peace in their last years. Not because they let everything go, but because they stopped fighting it.

PermalinkI am going to say what nobody else will say yet. The way you talk about detachment, it sounds like you are calling emotional disconnection wisdom. But the strongest people I know are the ones who care deeply and stay connected. Detachment might feel like peace, but it also feels like being alone.

PermalinkWe've turned a simple question into something cosmic. Real peace is staying calm when your coffee is cold, not reaching some final spiritual state.

PermalinkI know nothing about spirituality, but the part about detachment to the point of not eating something went wrong. That is not progress, that is a person who stopped taking care of themselves. There is nothing wise about letting your body fail.

Does atheism make you more rational, or just leave a void you fill badly?
One of the common atheist temptations is to confuse unbelief with clarity, to assume that religion is the irrational part, so removing religion must leave behind a cleaner and more rational human being. But human beings do not work that way, human beings operate through beliefs, emotions... We do not stop wanting ritual, purity, moral tribe, sense of sacredness or transcendent meaning just because we stop using religious language for those desires.

Should we judge Christianity against what came before it, not against what it built?
One of the stranger habits of modern discussion is that Christianity is often judged exclusively against twenty-first-century moral standards while its alternatives are judged against the Christianity that helped shape those standards in the first place. This does not mean Christianity is innocent of wrongdoing. Religious wars happened. Churches accumulated power. Christians persecuted one another. Any honest reading of history has to acknowledge that. The question is whether Christianity made…

Were people really any dumber in the past?
There is a habit in modern thinking that treats the past as a kind of half-awake state, as if the Age of Enlightenment woke us up. People imagine ancient societies as crowded with superstition, as if belief itself was less disciplined before modern science arrived to rescue it. It is a comforting story because it makes the present feel like an intellectual peak rather than just another arrangement of limits and assumptions.

Is Christ's message eternal, but never meant to be read literally?
Christians rightly say that the truth revealed in Christ is not temporary, but rather eternal. That is true, but it does not mean literalism and it does not mean that we are to drop interpretation. The mistake comes when some believers quietly turn that into a different claim: because the truth is eternal, every biblical utterance should be treated as though it arrived outside history and therefore needs no interpretation any longer, but rather has to be taken literally in the same way...

Does being entertained all the time make ordinary life feel dead?
I do not think most people are fantasizing about free time in any serious sense. They are fantasizing about free time available for consumption. That is a different thing. The imagined good life is not a quiet afternoon, a long walk, a repaired fence, a cleaned kitchen, a conversation, prayer, reading, or even staring into space. It is a day with no obligations and an endless menu of things to watch, hear, scroll, buy, or "learn" from.

Can Buddhist detachment really be the root of a good moral system?
One thing I have never been able to shake about Buddhism is that its moral vision seems to rest on a foundation that I regard as fundamentally mistaken. I am not talking about all the virtues it encourages. Non-violence is good, Self-control is good, patience is good. A refusal to be consumed by greed or anger is obviously good. Christians should be able to acknowledge virtues wherever they find them. My concern is with the principle underneath those virtues.

Did Catholic monotheism make the universe safe to study?
It is easy to tell the story of science as a clean break from religion. Enlightenment replaces superstition, observation replaces faith, reason replaces authority. It sounds tidy, and it flatters modern assumptions. But it misses something more interesting and, honestly, more uncomfortable for that narrative: the idea that the universe is intelligible in the first place is not self-evident. It is a metaphysical claim. And Catholic monotheism is one of the major historical reasons that claim…

Is therapy just confession with the theology stripped out?
One of the funniest things about secular modern culture is watching people reinvent Christianity piece by piece while acting intellectually superior the entire time. People abandoned confession and now pay someone $240 plus taxes an hour to listen to them describe their guilt in a softly lit room. They abandoned sin and replaced it with "unprocessed trauma." They abandoned repentance and replaced it with "doing the work." They abandoned examination of conscience and replaced it with journaling…
