Trust as the price of forever is a steep trade, and I like that the speaker names a price at all. Most love poems pretend the whole thing comes free. This one puts the terms on the table.

I want to be your protector wait for me
I will be the guardian of your kind spirit
No one will ever harm you again
I need you to trust me
I will keep you safe, as if in a box draped in a white veil
And I will drive away the wicked from our path
I want to show you a new perspective
On life one that will bring you greater happiness
By my side, I want you to see yourself through my eyes
And you will behold such beauty, such delicacy, such intelligence
A woman who deserves the whole world
Even though the world fails to give it to her
I will be your man, for all eternity
The price of eternity is your trust
Among so many men in this world
I am the one the only one to whom you belong
A protector for your life
I just give you, my life.

PermalinkWanting her to see herself through his eyes is the line that stays with me, more than the guarding. For me that is the real promise in the poem, bigger than driving the wicked off the path. It reads like it was written for one particular person who doesn't quite believe it yet, and he knows it.
