Not missing who you became, only who you were before: that is the verse I would keep. Most people grieve the ending. You are grieving the beginning, and nobody sends a card for that. There are a couple of people I would rather have kept as strangers under the stars, and I only admitted it recently.

Universe a poem of broken Love
I still remember the silence
that lived between your eyes,
the way the moon held our shadows
as if it knew we'd say goodbye.
I wish I could return
to the night before we met,
before your name became a wound,
before love became regret.
Maybe I would walk past you,
maybe I would never stay,
because knowing how this ends
would make me choose another way.
You left your ghost beside me,
sleeping where you used to be,
and every night I close my eyes
hoping you'll come back to me.
But memories are cruel things—
they give you what you cannot hold.
They turn a moment into forever
and leave your hands empty and cold.
I don't miss who we became.
I miss who we were before.
Two strangers underneath the stars,
with no reason to hurt anymore.
And if I could meet you again,
I wouldn't ask you to stay.
I'd only look into your eyes
and remember the night
before everything slipped away.
Because sometimes the deepest pain
isn't losing someone you love
it's wishing you had never met them,
while still wishing
you could meet them once more.

PermalinkThat Lord Huron credit at the end makes sense, the whole poem reads like the song slowed down and turned into somebody actually talking. The verse where you'd walk past them if you knew how it ends is what I keep coming back to, and my guess is most people who say that would still stop. Thanks for posting it!
