Night does things to people that they won't admit in the day. When it's dark, when they think nobody is watching, they become another version of themselves.

A man cries. Legally, without guilt, without feeling he should be strong. A woman looks at something she would hide deep in daylight. A person drinks or smokes or does things they won't admit to themselves.

Night is safety. Night is the place where the things a person won't allow themselves in daylight can happen. You're not at risk. Only night sees you. Night doesn't tell. Night won't remember you.

That's a lie they tell themselves. Night sees everything. Every tear, every move, every thing you take and put in your mouth. Night sees how you behave when you think you won't have to answer for it.

And then the person becomes who they really are. Not who they pretend to be in daylight. In daylight you perform. At night you feel. In daylight you wear a mask. At night you take it off.

The worst part is when a person goes back from night to day. They put the mask back on. They play the role. But they know the feeling from night. They know the thing they allowed themselves. And now they have to hide it.

Night isn't when everything changed. Night isn't the moment you were free. Night is when you put on the mask. And when day comes, you put it back.

People wait for night. They hunger for night. Because at night you don't have to pretend. At night you can behave how you want. At night you can afford to be.

But day comes. Always. And everything has to go back to normal. Back to the mask. Back to the lie you tell yourself.

That's night. It's not liberation. It's just the thing that lets you see who you really are. And then we take that thing away and hide it until the next night.

Do people ever actually get comfortable after they see this? Like once you know, can you unknow it?

The thing is both versions are real though. Not one true and one fake.

But like, can you actually afford to be yourself, or is that still just another version of the mask?

The part about going back to normal in the morning... yeah that's exhausting to even read.

The hunger for night hit me. That single word does something.

The way you describe it, night's not freedom it's just... permission. Which maybe matters more than freedom anyway.

When you put the mask back on in the morning, is there anything that helps you stay sane through it?

If night is so safe, why does knowing that change how you see it? Does it feel the same once you've seen it?
