Let's pretend

That your last smile

Wasn't meant to say goodbye.

That every promise we once held

Didn't vanish with the sky.

We painted dreams in borrowed colors,

Fields of gold beneath the rain.

Now every canvas tells the truth—

Only ashes still remain.

Let's pretend that I'm okay,

That the sun still knows my name.

That we'll watch another afternoon

With our hands held just the same.

Let's pretend these empty rooms

Don't whisper where you've been.

If a lie can warm the cold,

Let's pretend...

Every tree recalls your voice.

The wind repeats the words we buried,

Like we ever had a choice.

The porch still waits at dusk in silence,

Coffee growing cold again.

Even time has learned to stumble

Where your story reached its end.

Some ghosts never ask forgiveness,

They just make sure you don't look back.

If tomorrow comes without you,

I'll greet it like a faithful friend—

Knowing hope is just another name

For something I can't mend.

Let's pretend that I'm okay,

Just one more fading afternoon.

Hand in hand inside my memory,

While the daylight leaves too soon.

If heaven keeps your laughter safe,

And earth keeps all my pain,

I'll keep pretending you are here...

Until we meet again.

The porch at dusk. Cold coffee. Hands that won't hold again. That's all I'm seeing and I keep coming back to those three things.

I copied out 'fields of gold beneath the rain' and 'even time has learned to stumble'. Those lines go somewhere inside me that I can't quite explain.

I'm invested in whether you actually believe what you're saying by the last stanza. Not worried-worried, but like - do you make it to that second pretending?

When you keep saying 'let's pretend I'm okay' - are you talking to someone else who was pretending too, or are you alone in those empty rooms?

After twenty years in people's houses, I recognize this. The part about greeting tomorrow like a faithful friend. That's someone who's made it through.

That line about coffee growing cold at the porch. How many times has that happened? Is it one specific afternoon, or an accumulation of all of them?
