Wait, does the narrator actually say all this out loud to the eulogy guy or is it all in his head? That detail keeps bothering me.

He Who Knew Nothing of the World
He who knew nothing of the world
saw the sun as only sun,
a touch as only touch,
a wound as only wound.
Tick. Tock.
From that fluttering,
fathomless arithmetic of stars,
from Copernicus to Galileo,
from that bright-breathing sea of sparks
he died today.
I followed him to the grave.
The man who gave the eulogy
was chalk and bone,
a pale mouth searching
for the name of that forgotten thing
called humankind.
I told him
that to see the sun as only sun,
the touch as only touch,
the apple as only apple,
was no poverty of vision
but its purest form;
that this cold creature
had indeed been alive,
because he had looked upon death
and called it death.
That frail figure,
soon to be scattered
like a slip of paper
drawn from the dark of my pocket,
remembered neither worth nor meaning.
He whispered that they had never been.
Never.
And all the while,
softly spoiling,
slowly sinking,
into this dreamed-of,
dust-dim,
imagined earth,
lay the man
who knew nothing of the world.

PermalinkHe remembered neither worth nor meaning, but is the speaker saying that was peaceful or just empty? Those feel like different things.
-
PermalinkI recognized something here about grief that doesn't need explaining. The way you carry absence without it having to mean anything.

-
PermalinkChalk and bone. The slip of paper drawn from a dark pocket. The dust sinking slowly. Those four images stay.
-
PermalinkThat part about calling death death, where it says he looked upon it and named it exactly what it was. The whole poem hangs on that one thing.
-
PermalinkDoes anything change for the narrator after telling the eulogy-giver all that? Or does he just live with what he said?
-
PermalinkDid anyone ever try to make him see the world differently, or did he stay simple and at peace his whole life?

The reverse.
Are you going to hurt me now, or later? Do you want me to go to the city with you? You just want to hurt me, but never leave me. You can grab me from behind, and I'll feel your muscular body and your rough hands. You make me lose my mind. You just want to hurt me, but never leave me... _The Neighborhood_ is playing on the radio. Young dreams for us to be so aggressive. You just want to hurt me, but never leave me. I can get you now. Do the reverse of what you always do to me. You make me lose

Patient as a tiger.
I am far from my goals, even though I try to achieve them. I am like a climber at the foot of Mount Everest. I need to be patient, as patient as a tiger stalking its prey. I need to be as patient as planet Earth has been for billions of years. I may fall along the way, but I will always get back up. I am like a climber at the foot of Mount Everest. Hypocrite.
You're alone, for obvious reasons. Too young and incredibly hypocritical, you act like the world is going to end today. That means nothing to me. Tell me, tell me what's going on in your head. Yes, you're young, rebellious, and unstable; your emotions are like a hurricane. Tell me, tell me what's going on in your head. Come on, tell me, I can help you. Come on, stop being immature and hypocritical. You weren't born for this. Hypocrite - Judson Kaique. 07/30/2026

Amorist's life
When we saw the stars waltzing out in the night sky When we were young, and you were mine, Your face softly fades from the grip of my memories Last time I saw you, the asters were susurrating your leave For the last time, for the final time.

Blue velvet.
He wore velvet, blue like the Pacific Ocean. Dark blue like the Mediterranean Sea. I watched him from afar. My heart burned for him, but when he left, the ocean entered a deep storm. He wore velvet, blue like the Pacific Ocean. I could still tell: there are tears streaming down his face. Blue velvet, like the Pacific Ocean, and an overwhelming emotional instability. I could still tell: there are tears streaming down that velvet. Blue velvet. Judson Kaique 27-07-2026
