For to-be parents
Parents names, hearts full of light,
Dreaming of a future warm and bright.
Tiny footsteps soon will grace your days,
Filling your home with wonder-filled ways.
Good luck with all the cries
For I’m sure those beautiful eyes
Might bring you tears
For tons of years
Both of happiness and joy
As you watch them play with a toy
To making ploys
A little miracle, precious and new,
I hope that they have a clue
For she/he is carrying pieces of both of you.
As y’all stick together like glue
With every heartbeat, love grows strong,
Preparing a place where they belong.
May joy and laughter guide your way,
As you welcome your blessing, day by day.

Permalink"Might bring you tears / For tons of years / Both of happiness and joy" is the part I keep rereading. Most baby poems stop at the wonder, and you let the crying sit right next to the joy without apologizing for it. That little stack of short lines is doing the honest work.

Permalink"Carrying pieces of both of you" is the line I'd want read at a blessing. It names something I think new parents brace against without words, that the kid isn't a fresh start so much as a recombination of everything you both already are, the parts you're proud of and the parts you hoped to leave behind. The poem holds that gently instead of pretending it's all light and bright.

PermalinkI like the message, though some of the rhymes feel a little forced in places. That said, the sincerity comes through clearly, and that's often more important in a poem like this than technical perfection.

PermalinkThe strongest idea for me is "carrying pieces of both of you." It's simple, but it captures something profound about parenthood. A child is both a continuation and something entirely new.

PermalinkIt's a very sweet poem. I like how it balances the idealized side of becoming a parent with the reality of sleepless nights and tears. That makes it feel more genuine.
