Science and the Means of Production: Perspectives on Max Strativism
In this publication, we address the ethical challenges facing scientists in a constantly changing world. Ethics in research, artificial intelligence, and biotechnology requires deep reflection and interdisciplinary dialogue. Promoting responsible science is essential for a sustainable and just future.
Young people in schools, colleges, and universities value only the learning process within a production dynamic, without understanding the new planetary events that place limits on exploitation. These guidelines, not found in any production manual, are the new concerns created by nature, which, like an indomitable force since time immemorial, is once again sending us the bill and imposing its rules. But how can we make nature friendly? How can we organize our production methods to be in harmony with nature's new requirements, which this time threaten us with the extinction of its resources?
Percentage of degraded land: Approximately 40% of the planet's land is degraded and has lost its capacity for cultivation.
Countries where cultivation is very difficult or no longer possible in some areas: Somalia, Chad, Niger, Sudan, Ethiopia, Afghanistan, Mongolia, northern China, some regions of India, Australia (arid zones), and southeastern Spain (due to desertification).
Soil problems: Erosion, desertification, salinization, pollution, nutrient loss, compaction, and deforestation.
Extinct species: Dodo, passenger pigeon, Tasmanian tiger, great auk, and western black rhinoceros.
Endangered species: Vaquita, Javan rhinoceros, tiger, Asian elephant, Bornean orangutan, mountain gorilla, hawksbill turtle, and polar bear.
It highlights our current need to understand how certain ecosystems function in order to create the conditions for some species to recover their habitat. We shouldn't think that evolution will solve everything; perhaps it will, but that doesn't guarantee our survival on Earth. Therefore, the difficult decision of natural selection forces us to make choices for nature that would take centuries of evolutionary process. For our survival, we must accelerate this process. Some countries have already run out of water. Countries with severe shortages of drinking water (approximately 25): Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Jordan, Israel, Lebanon, Iran, Iraq, Pakistan, India, Libya, Egypt, Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco, Chile, among others.
Important fact: More than 2.2 billion people worldwide lack access to safely managed drinking water, and global warming is increasing droughts and reducing freshwater availability.
Our quest should be to modify the natural order to align with our current observations, or at least to develop strategies that allow us to envision our lives in the coming centuries. Today, we lack certainty, and the search for guarantees for this certainty persists amidst production methods that threaten our extinction and the disappearance of species, including our own.
