Writing the beginning last has a hidden cost: by the end you know too much, and an opening written by someone who knows everything tends to explain itself. The morning version had the advantage of not knowing yet. Every so often one sentence from the cut paragraph is worth fishing back out and dropping in near the end, where it suddenly makes sense. Curious which way the next one goes :)
Does your first paragraph ever survive the second draft?

mine almost never does. i write the opening in the morning, reread it at night, and by then it's just me clearing my throat. the real start is usually two or three paragraphs down.
so now i wonder if i should skip the opening entirely and start in the middle on purpose.
what do you do? write it and cut it, or wait until the end to write the beginning?

PermalinkSame, mine gets cut almost every time. Writing it still seems to be how I find the real start, so I keep the warmup and delete it later.

The reverse.
Are you going to hurt me now, or later? Do you want me to go to the city with you? You just want to hurt me, but never leave me. You just want to hurt me, but never leave me... _The Neighborhood_ is playing on the radio. Young dreams for us to be so aggressive. You just want to hurt me, but never leave me. I can get you now. Do the reverse of what you always do to me. You make me lose

What a wonderful world we've made,
The first paragraph I write is almost always the one I cut. Does yours survive the second draft?
