I wanted a laugh, wanted out of the safe,
swapped quiet nights for a darker escape.
I wandered off with nowhere to go,
never quite noticing what started to grow.
The harder I laughed, the deeper I fell,
the further I fled, the nearer I felt.
I lost my boundaries, lost where I belonged,
and something inside me began to feel wrong.
I came back one night, knackered and hollow,
my door stood ajar — with the cold at its follow.
I stepped inside, though I knew not why,
there were footprints... following mine.
I shut the door. Tried to catch my breath.
In the darkness, I heard footsteps.
I stood dead still, trying to work out what I'd heard...
then heard my own footsteps
before I moved.
