To find a way out
Of this awful existence
Where I must accept that I
Will die
Without a happy ending
Always pretending
A smile that carries me through a life without meaning

I'm a ghost in the mirror
A stranger wearing my face
Every step takes me nearer
To a world I can no longer embrace
I've buried the man I used to be
Beneath the weight of what I can't set free

And if there's a light, it's fading
Like the last breath of a dying flame
I'm so tired of masquerading
While nothing inside me remains the same
I've lost the will to chase the sky
Just another soul asking himself why

Masquerading landing on fading made me go back and say that stanza out loud just for the sound of it.

The ghost in the mirror and the stranger wearing his face are the same man seen twice, once from outside and once from in. That doubling stayed with me longer than the dying flame did.

Read it twice and the second time I was half singing it. Do you write these with a tune in your head?
