The friend's whole case rests on a face she admits she couldn't see, since the teacher had her back to her. That's a report of an expression nobody witnessed, and he still half believes it.

I must have seen her (‘by chance’) as I was walking down the corridor. She was standing outside a classroom with another teacher. She was wearing a cream-coloured shirt; I can’t remember what trousers she was wearing (I didn’t look at them) – I didn’t have time. She was standing there, still… I’d say she looked stressed, and that (by chance) I’d seen her moments after she’d given some sort of telling-off.

During the break, I was looking for something to read (at last) when she turned up in the corridor; I looked at her, but couldn’t find anything. Ah, *Dom Casmurro* – at last, something decent!

I had a rather curious conversation:

—… On the day you were absent… yesterday, in fact, she sat in her chair and looked over here as if she were looking for you; I can’t really say.

— Right…

— I’m serious. On that day of the assessment, after a while, you went out to head downstairs, remember?

— Hmm…

— What a mood, eh. She watched you leave, then pulled a face that I couldn’t see because she had her back to me. Besides, I noticed that you […] and as you always keep your head down, you didn’t realise that she saw you smiling like that that day. — (Please excuse the omission)

—… I can’t really say, but I think… I shouldn’t… look back. Actually, I’ve just remembered a funny joke.

— Mm-hmm. It starts with ‘Helo’ and ends with ‘isy’, right? — (Bastard)

— You can shove that one up—

— CALM DOWN! Where’s all your politeness gone? — she asked, laughing mockingly.

—… anyway, I’m not going to do anything else about it. 160 reais probably thrown into the back of a cupboard, if not in the bin.

— Pessimistic as ever. I still think she might have some sort of feeling. The way you two used to talk… A bit? A bit; but… there was always something… extra.

I should point out that his pun was about ‘August’, which isn’t relevant here for now.

Anyway. Later on:

—… do you think you’re a romantic sort? — asked a lecturer, who’d already told a few people he’d shown an interest in ‘September’—a chap I’d also like to have a bit of a go at later.

— …

I simply ignored his attempt to probe me. Of course he’d know. Ah, perhaps ‘November’ had mentioned it, one day amidst her whispers—which I almost misinterpreted, but didn’t hear right to the end.

The door opened… It’s not her.
