You once held me close,

Post content

You once held me close,

Your love wrapped around my world,

I was special,

Your comfort, your choice.

But arguments turned tides,

Walls rose between us,

Now even my touch

Feels like a burden to you.

You let go,

But I still hold on -

To hands once warm,

To eyes that spoke,

To rides that carried us together.

I miss the you

Who made me his everything,

And though I cannot hug you now,

My heart still reaches,

Aching in silence.

Maybe it's not about getting them back, but just about how you don't stop being the person who loved them even after they stop being the person who loved you back.

You're holding on to something someone already let go of, and you know it, and you're holding on anyway. the one-sidedness of that is everything.

Holding onto the memory of someone being close when they've completely let you go is such a specific kind of heartbreak. that detail stayed with me.

The part where you're holding on to rides and conversations and the way they used to look at you. god.
