The Sin of Mirrors
They say mirrors were invented
to teach men
how to endure their own existence.
They lied.
They were created
to wait for you.
For centuries
they did nothing but repeat weary faces,
eyes in which hope had long since decayed,
smiles worn thin by the daily commerce of survival.
They learnt to reflect,
but never to understand.
Then you arrived.
And, for the first time,
glass ceased to be glass.
I saw it hesitate.
Like an old priest
who finds God too late,
the mirror forgot its sacred duty
to return the world as it was
and knelt before a single reflection.
From that day onwards,
we no longer see ourselves.
We are merely visitors
in a temple raised for your passing.
Our faces drift across the glass
like shadows asking permission
from a light that was never theirs.
There is something cruel
about your beauty.
Not because it humiliates,
but because it reveals.
It reminds us
that nature squanders miracles
with the very same indifference
with which it scatters rust,
disease,
and oblivion.
Perhaps that is why
mirrors fall silent
whenever you draw near.
They know
that every truth demands its price.
And to behold you
is to discover,
with the serenity of a verdict,
that some souls were never made
to be loved.
They were made
to condemn the rest of us
to the unbearable awareness
that perfection did exist,
if only for a single moment,
and it chose a face
that could never have been our own.

PermalinkIs there anything in your experience that made you think of mirrors this way, or was this purely imaginative territory?

PermalinkThe priest finding God too late - you're saying the mirror finally understands its reflection right when it has to abandon everything?

PermalinkSome souls made to condemn the rest of us to knowing perfection existed. Damn. π

PermalinkDid you come up with the mirrors falling silent idea first, or did it grow out of everything else you were exploring?
-
PermalinkI think the saddest line is that we're just visitors in a temple made for someone else's passing. That's such a specific kind of heartbreak.

PermalinkThe part where the mirror forgets its duty and just kneels. That image of something giving up its whole purpose is stuck with me.

PermalinkThis "you" in the poem - is it one specific person, or is it about beauty as this untouchable force in general?

Does your personality matter far less than you think?
I realize, interacting with students, teenagers and younger co-workers peers that many believe that their personality traits are a leading factor in deciding what do to or how to tackle their own career. Although younger people ask these questions more explicitly, older adults also seem to think along the same lines. I personally find it to be far more irrelevant than most people think. Besides my job, where I observe successful people doing the same role with drastically...
