Chapter 3: The Whispering Woods
The morning fog clung to Ashwood like a ghostly blanket. Emily stood at her bedroom window, staring at the dark forest beyond the town. The strange symbol from the old journal filled her thoughts.
A sudden knock startled her.
"Emily! Come downstairs!" her grandmother called.
When Emily reached the kitchen, she found an old man sitting at the table. His silver hair was wild, and his deep green eyes seemed to hold a thousand secrets.
"This is Mr. Hawthorne," Grandmother said. "He knows things about Ashwood."
The old man studied Emily carefully.
"You found the journal, didn't you?" he asked.
Emily froze. "How do you know?"
"Because your mother found it too."
Emily's heart raced.
"My mother?"
Mr. Hawthorne nodded. "Years ago, she searched for the truth hidden beneath Ashwood. Then she disappeared."
The room fell silent.
Before Emily could ask another question, a loud caw echoed outside. A black raven sat on the windowsill, staring directly at her.
The old man's face turned pale.
"They know you've begun the search."
"Who?" Emily whispered.
"The Shadows."
That evening, Emily couldn't stay inside. Carrying the journal and a flashlight, she slipped into the forest.
The trees seemed taller than ever. Strange whispers floated through the darkness.
Emily... Emily...
She spun around.
No one was there.
Then her flashlight revealed something carved into an ancient oak treeโthe same symbol from the journal.
Beneath it were three words:
THE GATE AWAITS.
Suddenly, the ground trembled.
A hidden stone door slowly rose from beneath the forest floor.
And from the darkness beyond came a low, eerie growl.
