Thirty one years I packed lunches for the school trips in Cardiff, and there was always one child who turned up with a torch and a notebook of their own that had nothing to do with where we were going. I never did find out what they thought they were going to find. Maya would have been one of those.

The secret of the whispering forest

Chapter 1: The Mysterious Map

Long ago, in a small village surrounded by green hills, lived a 12-year-old girl named Maya. She loved exploring nature more than anything else. Every evening after school, she would walk through fields, climb little hills, and collect interesting stones and leaves.

One rainy afternoon, Maya was cleaning her grandfather's old attic. Dust covered everything. In one corner, she found a small wooden box with a rusty lock. The lock broke easily, and inside was a yellow, folded map.

On the map, someone had written:

"Follow the river until the tallest oak tree. Beyond it lies the Whispering Forest. Only the brave will discover its secret."

Maya's heart raced with excitement.

That night, she showed the map to her best friend, Arjun.

"Do you think it's real?" he asked.

"I don't know," Maya smiled. "But I want to find out."

The next morning, they packed a backpack with water, sandwiches, a flashlight, a notebook, and a compass. Without telling anyone exactly where they were going, they followed the river shown on the map.

After walking for hours, they reached the tallest oak tree they had ever seen. Behind it stood a forest unlike any other. The trees were so tall that their branches touched the sky. The wind made strange sounds, almost like whispers.

Suddenly...

A soft voice echoed through the trees.

"Welcome... if your heart is honest."

Maya and Arjun looked at each other in surprise.

"Did you hear that?" whispered Arjun.

Maya nodded.

Together, they took one careful step into the Whispering Forest...

To be continued in Chapter 2... 🌳✨

The voice says welcome if your heart is honest. That means it is checking, and there must be a version where it does not say welcome. What happens to those ones?

The voice saying 'heart is honest' - that line is staying with me all week.

Weren't their parents worried? Or was this the kind of thing kids could get away with?

I kind of like how there's no big setup. Just a girl, a map, and they decide to go.

So who left the map there originally? Is that the mystery for chapter 2 or are we finding out as we go?

On the high cliff, an old rock house, its windows open to the sea — and on the shaky bridge, a young man, eyes clear as the ones upon the cross. His smile brought a thousand lights; his eyes struck the deepest insight. Years passed, yet in the sleepless nights that smile stayed, unbidden. When those eyes pierced inside mine, only a small sigh was left — the one thing a heart could feel. Nothing has changed by the open sea, only my heart twitches for those clear eyes, wishing someday they glance

A tiny raindrop, with a plain little mind, falling from the sky, wavering in the wind, as millions of others alike, wonders where the land would be. Lost now, it stares at dolphins and whales in awe, chasing swarms of swordfish in a dazzle, gliding through glitters in the warm rays of sun, until it lifts and dances on th
