A boy stepped from the darkness.
Mia recognized him from the photograph.
Ethan Vale.
He looked older than the boy in the picture, but his eyes were unmistakable.
βMia,β he said.
βHow do you know my name?β
βBecause I've been waiting for you.β
Mia held up the diary.
βYou wrote this?β
Ethan shook his head.
βNo.β
βThen who did?β
Ethan looked at the diary.
βThe diary wrote itself.β
Nobody spoke.
Then Ethan said something that made Mia's blood run cold.
βThis isn't the first time you've found it.β

My guess: every time Mia finds it she forgets, and Ethan is the only one who keeps his memory. That would explain why he looks older and she doesn't.
