She knew she shouldn't call him.
She called.
He picked up after the second ring — that was the first warning. Nobody picks up after the second ring at two in the morning unless they're awake. Unless they're waiting. And someone who's waiting wants more than just talking.
She said hi. He said nothing, just breathed. Outside his window a car passed.
She should have hung up.
She didn't.
*I'm here,* he said finally. Two words. Like he knew she didn't need more.
And her — who spent the whole evening telling her friend she was over him, that she was done, that this was the last year of her life she'd waste on someone like him —
she typed her address.

PermalinkThe thing nobody names is that the choice happens before you dial. You say the thing out loud to your friend, "I'm done, I won't do that again", and you actually mean it. The certainty is real. But certainty is a day-thing. At 2 a.m. when everyone you know is asleep, the certainty is in a different timezone. He picked up on the second ring because both of you knew she would call. Both of you were waiting. That's not weakness, exactly. It's just the time difference between what you believe in the light and what you feel in the dark.

Although younger people ask these questions more explicitly, older adults also seem to think along the same lines. I personally find it to be far more irrelevant than most people think. Besides my job, where I observe successful people doing the same role with drastically...

Does splitting 'hard' and 'soft' skills make people worse at both?

Examples include data analysis, programming, graphic design, accounting, dancing, painting… They are usually the core of a profession, particularly the part of it excluding interaction with other people.
