What keeps you pushing when you're tired enough to stop?

You're speaking for the ones who can't say it yet, and when they read this they're going to recognize themselves all the way through.

I read this at 3am when I can't sleep. That bit about everyone in the room feeling this, yeah, that's real. So many of us are just quietly running on empty and nobody notices.

Yeah there's no shame in being exhausted by carrying everything. I've felt that exact weight before and it's like nobody tells you it's allowed to just stop and say I can't right now.

The bit about laughing while you get it out, that's the whole move right there. Sounds like you already know that the exhaustion and the strength are the same thing woven together. When people read this, the ones who've been drowning just to keep floating will finally see themselves in those three words.

The bit about just being tired bro, yeah, that's the real one. You keep going because you have to, not because you feel ready for it.

  • Do you really need to have an opinion on everything?

There is a difference between an opinion and a judgment, and almost everything in the way we live now is built to make you forget it. An opinion is what you can produce in four seconds when someone asks. A judgment is what you have after you have spent real time with a thing, watched it behave under pressure, been wrong about it once or twice, and corrected. The first is nearly free. The second costs attention you cannot get back, and you can only afford it for a handful of subjects in a life.…

  • Shouldn't cultural criticism go both ways?

I had one of those big-tech team dinners. The conversation turned to how people met their partners. A few of my Indian coworkers talked about arranged marriage, family involvement, and how much more normal it is in India for marriage to be treated as a family matter and not just a private romantic choice. That part is ok, different cultures and all. It was interesting to see their perspective, even though I wouldn't share it. The problem started when one of them stopped describing the custom...

  • Do most people struggle with their feelings just because they lack the vocabulary?

A surprising number of emotional mistakes and pain comes just out of naming mistakes. Someone says he is angry when he is really ashamed. Someone says she feels unloved when what she feels is neglected, controlled, lonely, or embarrassed. Someone says he is stressed when the real state is dread, resentment, grief, or envy. Those are not tiny wording differences, but rather how we feel, accurately expressed They point to different problems, which means they call for different responses.

  • Does 'no days off' actually mean you're training hard enough?

“No days off” is one of those phrases that sounds tough right up until you think about it for more than five seconds. Because what is the sentence actually saying? If you genuinely train hard, really hard, with enough intensity to force adaptation, your body will demand recovery. Not emotionally. Biologically. Tissue damage, nervous system fatigue, glycogen depletion, inflammatory response. The entire point of hard training is that the body cannot fully maintain itself without rebuilding…

  • Should you really be drinking raw milk?

I think a person who sleeps well, lifts regularly, eats decent food, goes outside, and keeps real social ties is doing some of the most evidence-supported things available for long-term health. I have noticed that a surprising number of people learned that from communities that also push raw milk, seed-oil paranoia, and other nonsense. The problem is not that medicine is wrong. The problem is that medicine left a prevention gap, and the cranks moved in.

  • Does your personality matter far less than you think?

I realize, interacting with students, teenagers and younger co-workers peers that many believe that their personality traits are a leading factor in deciding what do to or how to tackle their own career. Although younger people ask these questions more explicitly, older adults also seem to think along the same lines. I personally find it to be far more irrelevant than most people think. Besides my job, where I observe successful people doing the same role with drastically...

  • Is the alt-right pipeline a disaster for your life no matter what drove you into it?

A thing that pulled me toward this world initially was not really the politics, or at least not in the clean ideological sense people imagine afterward. It was the feeling of recognition. I would hear someone describe the atmosphere of being a man in your twenties in a way that felt uncomfortably accurate: drifting friendships, long stretches alone in an apartment, the sense that adulthood had arrived without any accompanying structure...

  • If you're not a billionaire, why do you vote like one?

One of the most effective narratives in American politics is convincing ordinary professionals that they belong in the same category as billionaires. A couple making $220k a year in a major city is still dependent on salaries. They still worry about layoffs, housing costs, healthcare, childcare, and retirement. They cannot buy political influence. They cannot move markets. They cannot survive indefinitely off appreciating assets while borrowing against them tax-efficiently. They are not living…
