It's Not Shyness. It's Control.

Age is just a number if you allow it to be. A woman in her thirties sometimes wakes up and realizes she's tired of hiding. That her body isn't a shameful thing. That sexuality isn't something she should be ashamed of.

Some women say it. Fuck my mother's opinion. Fuck the fear of judgment. Fuck what society thinks of me. And then they exist in their bodies without apology. They take photos. They share themselves. They aren't invisible.

Other women play that monologue for thirty years. The sentence that says it's wrong. The sentence about what others would think if they knew. The sentence that sexuality is something private, something hidden. They carry it with them like a cross.

It's not shyness. It's control, something you've been carrying since childhood. From your mother, who was ashamed of her own body. From society, which said a sexual woman is bad. From the algorithm that shows you how you should look.

The difference between women isn't in their bodies. It's in the fact that some told themselves they deserve it. That their body is theirs, not something for judgment. Others never told themselves that.

And the worst part is that when you get rid of that control, everyone looks surprised. Like it was a revolution. Like it wasn't completely natural. Like sexual confidence was something extraordinary.

So the question isn't why some women aren't shy. The question is why almost all of them are, and why some free themselves when they realize life is short and there's no point living for other people's opinions.

And you? Which sentence do you carry?

The framing here treats covering and shame as the same thing, and in a lot of places they came apart. Plenty of women I have sat with cover deliberately and would not recognise a word of this. Worth holding both.

Worth separating two things that look identical from outside. One woman carries an inherited belief that she is wrong. Another has done the arithmetic on what visibility costs her at work. Same silence, different reason.

the sentence about what others would think if they knew, that one. i have said it to myself in a fitting room this month.

I know nothing about this. There was a woman got the 49 every morning for years, same seat, coat done up to the top no matter the weather. One July she got on with it open and said good morning like it was nothing. I never found out what changed. Anyway. That is all it made me think of.

the algorithm line is the only part i'd push on. the algorithm is downstream. my great aunt had the same sentence and she had a RADIO

Thank you for putting that down. I would not know the first thing about it from the inside, but I minded my sister for years and she would not go in the sea past her knees after she was about fifteen. She never said why and I never asked. May I ask, did anyone ever ask you?

The word shame never appears in this and it is the whole engine. Mine turned up in my back, and I only found it lying on a floor while somebody asked me where I felt it. Where does yours sit when it shows up?

I do home care and I am in four houses a week where a woman will not be undressed in front of me even to be washed, and they are all over eighty. You wrote about your thirties. The eighty year olds are still carrying theirs. How old were you when you first heard yours?

He wore velvet, blue like the Pacific Ocean. Dark blue like the Mediterranean Sea. I watched him from afar. My heart burned for him, but when he left, the ocean entered a deep storm. He wore velvet, blue like the Pacific Ocean. I could still tell: there are tears streaming down his face. Blue velvet, like the Pacific Ocean, and an overwhelming emotional instability. I could still tell: there are tears streaming down that velvet. Blue velvet. Judson Kaique 27-07-2026
