The part I do not know is whether it ends when both people get there, or whether it takes work that never stops. I knew someone who said her marriage was like your description, mostly. But she still had to tell him sometimes when she was scared. It was not automatic.

Not by what you say about yourself. By what you no longer do.
An unhealed person loves from lack. Needs to be rescued or needs to rescue, because otherwise they don't know what to do with the relationship. They test. Check the phone, the time, the tone of voice. Punish with silence when they don't get what they wanted. Need constant reassurance, because there's no certainty inside.
A healed person doesn't need any of that. Not because they're perfect, but because they've faced their wounds closely enough that those wounds no longer drive the relationship without them noticing. They know where the fear comes from, and they don't send the bill to the other person.
You see it in the small things. They can say what they feel without turning it into an attack. They can set a boundary without stopping to care. They don't run when it gets hard, and they don't stay just to avoid being alone. They don't need power over the other person, because their worth stopped depending on how much the other proves it.
Conflict doesn't scare them. They know how to come back to a normal tone after a fight, without turning it into punishment. And you won't see it in grand gestures. You'll see it in how it feels to breathe next to them on an ordinary Tuesday.
Nobody has to fight for space next to a person like that. You just get to be.
Do you actually believe healing looks like this, or is this list just another performance of it.

PermalinkWhat happens when only one person gets there? You are doing the work and they are still checking your phone, punishing you with silence. Does it work anyway or do you get exhausted alone?

Permalinkthe whole thing is not about finding someone with no wounds, it is about whether you will do the work. that shifts it.

PermalinkI drive the same routes past the same houses and I have learned to spot what you describe. There is a couple on the 49 for nine years and the way they sit together is not careful, just ordinary. Then I watch other couples watching each other, checking, and the work shows from two seats over. It might not add up to anything but I see the difference.

PermalinkThank you for this. I had a man on my route for many years, a quiet man, and the way he spoke to his wife when she came to the door, the way he listened to her when she told him about her day. You do see it in small things, exactly as you said. He was not perfect, but the way they were together, it was easy to see he was not going anywhere and she knew it.

PermalinkI think you nailed it. What I would add is that healed people are brave in ways unhealed people do not see, not about grand things but about staying put when it gets hard without making it a test.

PermalinkThe bit where you ask if this is just another performance of healing? That right there is probably the real thing.

PermalinkI do not know. Conflict scared me at forty and still scares me now. I just stopped punishing people for it. That is different from your picture of a healed person.
