The albino girl ran through the forest.
She ran without looking back.
The voices came from far away, but they were getting closer.
— Run!
Laughter.
— Get her!
She already knew those voices.
It wasn't the first time.
Almost every week, the same thing happened. They would surround her, mock her skin, her hair, her eyes. They threw mud, branches, anything they could find along the way.
It had been happening since school.
She lived beyond the forest, in a small rural community. A simple, pleasant, safe place. The forest was simply the shortest way home.
During the day, there was nothing unusual about it.
At night, however, it became different.
Quieter.
Darker.
Mysterious.
But nothing abnormal had ever happened there.
Until that night.
She kept running.
Tears mixed with sweat.
She didn't want to be different.
She didn't want to be an albino.
She just wanted to get home.
Behind her, the boys laughed.
They had cornered her before.
To them, it was a game.
To her, it wasn't.
The voices grew closer.
— Where are you gonna run to?
She stumbled, regained her balance, and kept going.
The sky was already almost dark.
Then it happened.
A flash.
For an instant, the entire forest turned white.
The sky seemed to tear open.
An impossible opening appeared above the trees.
Another flash.
This time, something fell.
Or passed through.
She had no time to understand.
It struck her body.
The girl fell to her knees.
Her body began to shake.
Then it contorted.
Her fingers curled inward.
Her arms trembled.
She tried to scream.
No sound came out.
Then her body rose.
Half a meter above the ground.
Still.
Motionless.
Suspended in the air.
The boys arrived a few seconds later.
Still laughing.
Until they saw her.
The girl was floating.
No one said a word.
She had her back to them.
Motionless.
Her white hair suspended around her face.
One of the boys took a step backward.
— What the fuck is that?
She slowly turned her head.
She looked at them.
The boys ran.
This time, no one was laughing.
One fell.
Another started crying.
A third screamed as he ran without even looking back.
No one was hurt.
No one was touched.
Nothing happened to them.
It was just a scare.
One of those moments that, years later, each of them would remember differently.
But they would all remember the same thing.
The girl.
Floating.
Still.
Motionless.
Utterly silent.
Her body did not move.
She did not breathe.
She did not blink.
She did not seem to feel cold, fear, or pain.
She was alive.
Or perhaps alive was still a word that made sense.
And she remained there, suspended in the middle of the forest.
As if something had entered that body.
And was now waiting.
