“Today, I Choose You”
I did not choose the place where I was born,
nor the name I bear,
nor the wounds that have marked my story,
nor the absences I will learn to endure.
I did not choose many of the things that have shaped who I am,
but today, I can choose the path I wish to follow.
And among all the paths in life,
I choose you.
I choose you to share my mornings,
to find your gaze upon waking,
to come to know your light and your shadows,
and to learn to love you—even for the parts of you
I do not yet know.
I do not choose you to heal my wounds,
nor to fill the voids within me.
I choose you because, even with all my fears,
my heart finds in you
a place where it longs to stay.
I do not know what the future holds for us,
nor how many storms we may have to weather,
but today, I want to walk alongside you,
to hold your hand when the world feels too heavy,
and to celebrate every sunrise by your side.
For while I cannot change my past,
I can decide what to do with my present.
And today, with my soul wide awake—
with all my wounds and all my hopes,
with everything I am and everything I dream of becoming—
I choose you freely, I choose you consciously,
I choose you with all my heart.
And if life were to grant me a fresh start,
if I could change my days, my paths, and my history,
I would still want to keep this freedom intact—
the freedom that, today, allows me to choose you.
Because among so many things I never had the power to choose,
and among so many paths I could have taken,
there is one decision that belongs solely to me—
a decision I wish to renew every single day of my life:
Today, I choose you.
Tomorrow, if life allows, I will choose you once again. And as long as God grants me breath,
I want my love to remain just that:
the most beautiful choice of my life—may it always be you.
