The Weight of the Wings
โThe stage lights were harsh, burning the back of my eyelids as I stood frozen in the wings. For three whole weeks, my room had turned into a makeshift theatre. Every single night, I paced back and forth, perfecting the dramatic pauses, matching my breath to the characterโs pain, and living out every line until it felt more real than my own life. I had poured my heart out into those five minutes.
โWhen the judges finally took the mic, the auditorium fell dead silent. My ears buzzed. Name after name was announced, echoing off the wooden walls, but mine never came.
โSitting alone on the cold stairs outside the backstage corridor, I clutched my script tightly in my hands. The paper was slightly crumpled from where my sweaty palms had squeezed it before going on stage. A bitter lump formed in my throat, and a hot tear slipped down, blurring the ink on the final page. It hurtโnot just a little, but deep down. You put your soul into something, bare your emotions in front of a room full of strangers, and just like that, it means nothing to them.
โMaybe I just wasn't good enough, a quiet voice whispered in my head.
โI sat there for a long time, watching people walk past, celebrating their wins, laughing, holding certificates. I didnโt want to talk to anyone. I just wanted the ground to open up and swallow the awkwardness of losing.
โLater that evening, back in my room, the silence felt heavier than usual. The script lay on my desk, half-open. I stared at it, the red ink corrections glaring back at me. A part of me wanted to tear it up and never touch acting again. But as I traced my fingers over the dialogues I had memorized line by line, the sting started to dull just a fraction.
โWinning is great, but standing up there under those blinding lights, speaking lines that made people feel somethingโeven if the judges didn't pick meโwas a rush unlike anything else. I didn't win today. But looking at the script one last time before closing the folder, I knew this wasn't the end of the show. It was just a brutal, unforgettable first act.
