THE ASHEN FRONT
Part I – The Storm Before Dawn
Chapter 1 – The Last Quiet Morning
The sunrise over the Republic of Norhaven looked ordinary.
Fishermen guided their boats through calm blue waters. School buses rolled through peaceful streets. Cafés filled with people discussing football, business, and weekend plans. Children laughed as they raced bicycles along the waterfront.
Nobody knew the world had less than twelve hours left before history changed forever.
Colonel Adrian Kael stood alone on the balcony of Military Intelligence Headquarters, watching the city wake beneath a blanket of orange light.
His coffee had gone cold.
For three nights, he had barely slept.
Every satellite report arriving from the northern border made less sense than the last.
Entire armored divisions had appeared and disappeared.
Communication towers went offline without explanation.
Unknown aircraft entered restricted airspace but vanished before radar could identify them.
Officially...
Nothing was happening.
Unofficially...
War had already begun.
A young intelligence officer hurried toward him.
"Colonel."
"What is it?"
"We intercepted another transmission."
"From where?"
"We don't know."
The officer handed him a tablet.
Only four words appeared.
THE FIRST FIRE FALLS TODAY.
No sender.
No coordinates.
No explanation.
Adrian stared at the screen.
His instincts told him one thing.
Someone wasn't making a threat.
Someone was giving a warning.
Chapter 2 – Shadows Across the Border
More than two thousand kilometers away, General Viktor Soren watched hundreds of armored vehicles disappear into dense forests.
No flags flew above the tanks.
Every national marking had been painted over.
No soldier wore insignia.
If someone photographed them, nobody could prove which country they belonged to.
That was exactly the plan.
"The operation begins at 18:00," Viktor said.
A commander nodded.
"Our drones?"
"In position."
"The missile batteries?"
"Ready."
"The cyber divisions?"
"Already inside enemy networks."
Viktor smiled.
"Good."
He looked toward the horizon.
"By sunrise tomorrow, every government on the continent will believe someone else started this war."
Chapter 3 – The Blackout
At exactly 5:47 p.m., every traffic light in Norhaven turned green.
Every single one.
Cars rushed into intersections.
Hundreds of collisions occurred within minutes.
Emergency services became overwhelmed.
Then...
The electrical grid failed.
Hospitals switched to emergency generators.
Cellular networks disappeared.
Internet connections collapsed.
Television screens turned black.
Air traffic controllers suddenly lost communication with dozens of aircraft.
Nobody understood what was happening.
Inside Military Intelligence Headquarters, alarms screamed.
A technician shouted,
"We're under a cyberattack!"
Another yelled,
"Our satellites are offline!"
Then the room went silent.
Every monitor displayed the same message.
WELCOME TO THE ASHEN FRONT.
Chapter 4 – Fire From the Sky
The first explosion came without warning.
Not at a military base.
Not at an airport.
A bridge.
Thousands of commuters were crossing it when precision missiles tore through its foundations.
Steel twisted.
Concrete shattered.
Vehicles plunged into the river below.
Across the nation...
Explosions erupted everywhere.
Fuel depots.
Communication towers.
Naval ports.
Air-defense stations.
Each strike lasted less than ten seconds.
Each target had been selected months in advance.
The attacks weren't random.
They were perfect.
Chapter 5 – Operation Ashfall
Colonel Adrian Kael entered the underground war room.
The President stood before a massive digital map.
Red warning lights covered the borders.
"What do we know?" the President asked.
Adrian took a breath.
"We're not facing one invasion."
Silence.
"We're facing three."
The room froze.
"Simultaneously?"
"Yes."
"Our allies?"
"No response."
"Our satellites?"
"Destroyed."
"Our navy?"
"Under attack."
"Our air force?"
"Scrambling."
The President slowly removed his glasses.
"Then this is it."
Adrian nodded.
"Yes, sir."
"This is war."
Chapter 6 – The Ghost Battalion
Major Lena Draven had commanded special operations for fifteen years.
She believed she'd seen everything.
She was wrong.
Her helicopter landed beside an abandoned research station hidden deep in the mountains.
No enemy soldiers.
No gunfire.
Only silence.
Inside...
The walls were covered with strange symbols.
Laboratories stood abandoned.
Computers remained powered despite the blackout.
Then her radio crackled.
"Lena..."
It was Adrian.
"We've found encrypted files."
"What do they say?"
"They mention something called Project Ashfall."
"What is it?"
"We don't know."
"But every country involved in this war has been searching for it."
Suddenly...
A distant explosion echoed through the valley.
Lena rushed outside.
The mountain opposite the station...
Was opening.
Gigantic steel doors slowly separated.
Something enormous had been hidden beneath the rock for decades.
Her squad raised their rifles.
"What is that?"
Nobody answered.
Because nobody knew.
As the doors finished opening...
A convoy of black armoured vehicles emerged.
None carried national markings.
One by one...
Their headlights switched on.
Then every vehicle began moving directly toward Lena's position.
She whispered,
"Take cover."
The first shot of the mountain battle echoed through the valley.
And with it...
The true war finally began.
