Soul or Spirit — Do You Know the Difference?
Most of us use these words interchangeably. Ancient Indian traditions didn't.
According to traditional beliefs explored in a recent piece by True Horror Feed, the soul was linked to the physical body, conscious awareness, and personal identity — the part of us that experiences life directly.
The spirit, by contrast, was seen as something deeper — closer to the unconscious mind, a storehouse of memories and impressions that exists beyond ordinary awareness.
This distinction shaped centuries of ritual:
🔹 Funeral rites weren't just about mourning — they were believed to help release earthly attachments
🔹 Practices near the deceased were symbolic acts meant to sever ties to life's experiences
🔹 Unfinished desires or sudden death were thought to leave behind "residual energy" — one folkloric explanation for ghosts
Even everyday customs carry this thread — touching an elder's feet as an energy exchange, or shaving one's head after a death as a symbol of release.
None of this is scientifically proven. But it's a reminder that how different cultures make sense of death says a lot about how they value memory, identity, and closure.
What do you think — folklore, psychology, or something we haven't fully understood yet?
