Has Anyone Built a Business Using Remote Models?
Is anyone here running a business where models take the photos themselves and send them to you for commercial licensing or sale?
I'm thinking about building something similar and would love to hear real experiences. What works, what doesn't, and what legal or practical issues should I expect?
Ah, a platform where supply has zero switching costs and demand is price-elastic. What could go wrong? (I'm asking because I've thrown money at four of these.)

What stops a model uploading to five platforms at once? If there's no exclusivity, inventory becomes commoditized the moment it exists. If you require it, how do you pay them enough?
Look at what already tried this. Patreon worked because creators drove supply. Shutterstock by cutting tiny checks at the bottom. The in-between spot (where you need margins but can't force exclusivity) is the graveyard. Your edge would be lower model-acquisition cost or higher buyer prices. Do you have either?
Start with unit economics. Assume 50% platform cut, and a model makes $100/month average. Your cost per active model? Payment processing at 2.9%, trust and safety review, chargeback handling, support. Break that down and you'll see why most of these collapse. It's not a nice business until massive scale.
Everyone sees passive income. Supply aggregation is capital-intensive, chargeback risk is brutal, and existing marketplaces crushed margins. What's your edge against Shutterstock?
The question I'd push back on first: who keeps the upside if the model is also the photographer? You're licensing what (the rights to their face, their time, or some percentage of each)? That murky split is where these blow up. I've seen platforms claim they own the license, models claim they own the images, and lawyers end up owning the revenue.
