You have also faced this situation where you have to choose between the streams in secondary education, and this confusion can affect the future also in case you choose the wrong stream in relation to your interests. Sometimes a specific subject from a stream can excite you, but another can’t. So, this clarity has been given in NEP 2020, where there is a right to choose any subjects from any stream according to your interest. For example, if a student likes Physics with Economics or History with Business Studies, they can make that subject combination.
It is a boon for the students as they can make the subject combination according to their knowledge, and it will help them to make their career at their will. This interdisciplinary learning is helping the students to choose the career according to their strengths and skills.
Skill Development
The NEP 2020 structure offers vocational education from Class 6, where the students get knowledge of coding, entrepreneurship, financial literacy, artificial intelligence, communication skills, and design thinking to support the students to be ready for the future and get employment after education. The earlier system was dependent solely on rote learning; that has shifted to practical skills.
This is reducing the gap between the students’ academic knowledge and future careers. Skilled students can get employment easily, as now employers want skills rather than degrees.
Activity-Based Learning
Earlier, the classrooms were based on the system of lecture methods where teachers gave lectures and students only listened. But NEP supports that the students should also participate in the classrooms. Instead of lectures, the teacher should use creative methods like giving real-life examples, case studies, projects, smartboard presentations, activities, debates, and group discussions to make the students active in the class.
This reform is initiated to develop the creative, problem-solving, and analytical skills of students rather than forcing them into rote learning and memorisation. They will try to use the concepts in real life to solve problems. They will get concept clarity, and that will help them to remember concepts for a long time.
Multilingual
People understand their mother language more easily than other languages, so NEP 2020 forces the educational institutes to teach students in their mother tongue till Class 5 and, if they want, till Class 8. Students will learn concepts easily if they are taught in their mother tongue or regional language. If every student in the class uses their language, then students can learn different languages in the classroom. They can understand each other’s culture with the sweetness of every language. They will understand how our country is culturally colourful.
Technology as a Core Part
NEP 2020 has normalised the use of technology in teaching. This reform has instructed the institutions to provide knowledge through whiteboards, videos, etc. Some institutions are also using augmented reality and virtual reality to teach the students. Not only this, but the students are also getting digital skills from Class 6 to make them ready for employment and to reduce the gap between academics and employment. Computers as a subject are started from primary classes to help them get digital knowledge.
Continuous Assessment
The National Education Policy promotes continuous assessment where the students are analysed on a problem-solving and analytical basis. Only the scores of the final exams are not used for analysis; a complete analysis of the student happens on the basis of ranking, portfolio, etc. Daily behaviour and activities are recorded, and then a complete assessment of the student happens. This supports the creativity of students and discourages the stress of students related to memorisation in exams.
Higher Education Reform
Higher education is also reforming as they are getting the benefits of entry and exit freedom in undergraduate and postgraduate courses. They can choose any subject, and if they want to exit a course in one year, they can do so, and they will still get the certificate for that. In the future, if they want to continue, they can do it in the future.
Teaching Is Getting Advanced
The way of teaching the students is changing. Teachers are also using new techniques for teaching the students. They are using technology, and continuous training camps are organised to train them. Teachers are using interactive methods to keep the students active during the class.
Focus on Research
The National Education Policy has made it important for the students to focus on research and experiments rather than being passive learners and just memorising the concepts. Educational institutions are giving chances to students to experiment with science activities. Various exhibitions are happening to showcase them. Teachers are also practically showing the experiments.
Inclusive Education
The National Education Policy 2020 encourages inclusive education where every student gets admission in the same school. In this reform, instead of giving different institutes to special children, they are getting education at the same schools. Various changes have been made in the classroom and the school to support these children.
