Aurora - Part 18

Aurora continued down the street.

The Army followed behind her.

They no longer tried to block her path.

They simply followed.

She turned one corner.

Then another.

She entered a residential neighborhood.

People watched through their windows.

Some closed their doors.

Others filmed.

The broadcast continued.

A soldier received a message over the radio.

— We have civilians ahead.

The commander replied:

— Keep your distance. No one approaches her.

Aurora continued.

Then a man appeared in the street.

He was an adult.

He was holding a gun.

Before anyone could react, he began shooting.

The gunshots echoed between the houses.

The bullets struck Aurora.

They fell.

None of them injured her.

She kept walking.

The man fired again.

More shots.

Nothing.

— STOP! — a soldier shouted.

The man continued.

— DROP YOUR WEAPON!

Aurora did not stop.

The man kept firing until the gun was empty.

Silence.

He looked at the magazine.

Empty.

Then he dropped the weapon.

He ran toward a parked pickup truck.

The engine started.

— NO! — a soldier shouted.

The pickup accelerated toward Aurora.

She did not move aside.

The vehicle struck her body.

And came apart.

The front of the pickup folded like paper.

The engine was crushed.

The hood flew upward.

The windows exploded.

The vehicle came to a complete stop, utterly destroyed.

The man climbed out of the wreckage.

He was injured.

He staggered a few meters.

Then he fell.

He began crawling.

Aurora continued moving forward.

He reached her legs.

Touched her.

— You won't touch my son.

Aurora stopped.

For the first time on that street, she became completely motionless.

Behind her stood the man's house.

At a second-floor window, a boy was watching everything.

Aurora looked at the window.

The man noticed.

He tried to get up.

He grabbed a jerrycan.

— No!

A soldier rushed forward.

But the man threw the gasoline.

The liquid struck Aurora.

Some of it splashed onto the man himself.

He realized his mistake too late.

The smell filled the air.

He set it on fire.

The flames rose immediately.

The man screamed.

His body fell to the ground.

Aurora caught fire, too.

The flames engulfed her body.

What remained of her clothes burned away.

The cameras kept broadcasting.

The helicopter recorded everything.

The entire world was watching.

The man rolled desperately across the ground.

Aurora remained suspended in the air.

Floating.

In silence.

The flames engulfed her body, but there were no injuries.

No reaction.

No attempt to extinguish the fire.

After a few seconds, the flames subsided.

The man remained on the ground.

Aurora began moving forward again.

Toward the house.

The soldiers stood frozen.

No one knew what to do.

— She's going inside the house.

Aurora passed through the wall.

The concrete warped around her.

The wall was compressed.

The house began to give way.

Doors broke.

Furniture was crushed.

But Aurora continued without changing pace.

She ascended.

She entered the boy's bedroom.

He was crying.

Cowering against the wall.

Aurora stood before him.

The boy was trembling.

— Please...

She did not answer.

— I didn't do anything.

Aurora simply looked at him.

— I didn't know...

The boy began crying even harder.

— Please, forgive me.

Aurora continued looking at him.

There was no anger on her face.

No satisfaction.

No threat.

Only that same calm gaze.

The boy became completely paralyzed.

Outside, no one spoke.

The soldiers watched through the cameras.

The helicopter hovered above the house.

The broadcast was live.

Aurora slowly turned her head.

Then she turned her body.

And left.

Without touching the boy.

Without saying a word.

She passed through the ruined house again.

She went out into the street.

The soldiers made way for her.

No one tried to stop her.

Aurora kept walking.

She retraced her path along the same street.

Past the vehicles.

Past the soldiers.

Past the cameras.

Past the crowd, now gathered much farther away.

No one approached her.

No one tried to touch her.

They simply watched.

Aurora returned along the path she had taken earlier.

She crossed the road again.

The faithful had moved away.

Some were still praying.

Others simply stared.

She entered the forest once more.

The soldiers followed her as far as they could.

Then they fell behind.

Aurora continued alone.

Among the trees.

Slowly.

At the same speed as before.

Until she reached the place where it had all begun.

She stopped.

Exactly where she had been that morning.

The same spot.

The same distance from the ground.

About half a meter.

She became motionless.

Her face turned forward.

Without saying anything.

Without looking back.

Without showing any sign of fatigue.

As if nothing had happened.

And after several hours of chaos, gunfire, fire, crowds, soldiers, cameras, religious believers, and destruction, Aurora simply returned to the place where she had been for weeks.

And stayed there.

Floating.

As always.

She stopped moving exactly once on that whole street, and it was for the window. Bullets, truck, fire: all just noise to her.
