The moral intuitions we now call self-evident — that every person has equal and inviolable worth, that the stranger of the wrong tribe still has a claim on us, that the strong owe mercy to the weak — were strange, contested inventions long before they were obvious. This series traces eight of them back to a source the modern world has mostly stopped naming, without asking you to believe the theology to follow the history.
